Abstract:
Deterioration and degradation of aging structures is a major concern worldwide. It is often necessary to evaluate the integrity of such structural systems. Early detection and eventual quantification of damage are important for improved safety, to prevent potential catastrophic events, and to extend the service life by repairing/retrofitting the components of the structure. Different methodologies have been proposed in the literature for the identification and localization of damage based on piezo-electric ceramic (PZT) sensors. The conventional methods, which differentiate the damage as incipient, moderate and severe, are based on experience. A new algorithm has been developed to determine the severity of damage using experimental parameters. The basic advantage of the algorithm is that the severity of the damage can be computed in terms of the original stiffness of structure. A technique called electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) technique, which is based on piezo-electric ceramic (PZT) sensors, operates at higher frequency range and can typically detect damage at microscopic level. The primary objective of this work is to quantify damage based on the impedance signature of the EMI technique using a PZT patch and a LCR meter.
